Publisher groups ask the EU and Canada to act on AI search summaries

Seven publisher trade groups from Europe and Canada formed a coalition on October 26, 2026. They asked leaders at the EU and Canada summit in Montreal on October 29 and 30 to commit to protecting independent media. Their statement names AI summaries inside search engines as the biggest threat and backs the SPUR content telemetry standard. It cites no traffic figures and names no company.

Our take

Pressure on AI summaries keeps building, and rules that force usage reporting would reshape how AI search shows and credits content. Brands should treat this as a signal to measure their own AI visibility now. Track which of your pages AI Overviews and ChatGPT cite, and keep the pages that earn clicks fresh and specific, because the rules for AI answers may change quickly over the next year.
