OpenAI says ChatGPT search volume is now one fifth of Google

OpenAI consumer product lead Adam Fry told Alex Kantrowitz that ChatGPT’s volume of search-like queries is now roughly one fifth of Google’s. He said ChatGPT went from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in the last two months, and that every question that sends ChatGPT to search the web counts as a search. Search Engine Roundtable noted that Google says its own search volume is at an all-time high.
Our take
Treat this as OpenAI’s number with OpenAI’s definition, not an audited market share. Even discounted, it says people now take the person, place, finance and health questions that used to start on Google to ChatGPT. This week, ask ChatGPT the 20 questions your best buyers ask before they buy and note where you are cited and where a competitor is. That list is your AI search baseline.
