llms.txt is a plain-text file at a site's root that lists its key pages for AI tools, with a short summary of each. It's a proposed convention, not an official standard.
Does llms.txt help AI visibility
The evidence is thin so far. Ahrefs studied 137,210 domains in May 2026. 28% of them published an llms.txt file, and 97% of those files got zero requests that month (ahrefs.com/blog/llmstxt-study). The few AI fetches came mostly from coding agents and training crawlers. It's cheap to add, so treat it as a small extra on top of strong pages that crawlers can read.
