Google bans a TV box maker that sold access for ad fraud

PPC Land reported on November 7 that Google banned Videostrong Technology from certified Android hardware after the Google Threat Intelligence Group said the firm planted a backdoor named XCPE in its set top boxes. The November 2 report found the backdoor pulled more than 1.3 million boxes into a botnet that fired impression beacons for ads that were never shown and ran hidden browsers that clicked with no one watching. Google said cutting the affiliates’ command servers will sever access to at least 10 million more devices.

Our take

If you buy connected TV ads, treat household IP addresses as a weak fraud filter. This scheme sat inside living room boxes and registered impressions with ad servers and third party trackers while showing nothing on screen. Ask your verification vendor how they catch beacon firing with no creative render, and pull spend from inventory that cannot prove a screen was on. Log which CTV sellers you used in 2026 so you can press them if this traffic reached your campaigns.
